The coastal city of Galveston, Texas is a popular tourist destination housing a plethora of art & cultural attractions like theatres & cultural centers. However, not all these centers are functional today.
The Grand 1894 Opera House is just one such attraction regarded amongst the few remaining theatres of yesteryears. A legend goes that The Grand was built way back in 1894 through the sincere efforts of Henry Greenwall who is said to have raised $100,000 for its construction. The place served as a movie theatre for much of the 20th century. Fortunately the opera house survived through notable Hurricanes of 1900 & 1915 which was followed by a major restoration of the place in 1974.
Today, The Grand Opera House is enlisted in the National Register of Historic Places. A historic theatre close to The Tremont House hotel, the Romanesque Revival style Grand Opera House today functions as a non-profit performing arts theatre.
One of the many companies involved in promoting the traditional & cultural heritage of Galveston County is the Galveston Ballet. The company is basically a pre-professional, regional ballet academy of Galveston. Every year a mixed repertory program in fall & a full-length classical ballet in spring is presented by this Galveston Ballet Company at the Grand 1894 Opera House.
